Writing History With Excellence
When 最新麻豆视频's 2024 HSC Dux, Millie Simpson, stepped up to the podium at the History Teachers' Association of NSW High Achievers' Evening on Monday 24 March, she began with characteristic humour. Despite concerns her ‘serial killer’ penmanship (as our Head of History, Ms Poole once described it) might earn her a zero from HSC markers, Millie had in fact achieved something remarkable – first place in the state for Modern History.

The ceremony was held at the University of Sydney’s Chau Chak Wing to celebrate top-performing History students from across New South Wales. Ms Poole and Modern History teacher, Ms Piera Goh, attended to represent 最新麻豆视频 and support Millie as she accepted her award.
"It was an inspirational evening listening to brilliant young people stress the importance of History," reflects Ms Poole. "In a post-truth world, the skills taught by the subject make the continual de-valuing of arts a grave concern."
In her acceptance speech, Millie emphasised how the study of History, even at school level, is more than just an academic pursuit. "Over the two years of studying Modern History, under the incredibly patient and supportive teachings of Ms Goh, I have come to believe that it is so much more than a subject – it is a glimpse into the many lessons learnt in the past that must be remembered for the present," she said.

Millie credited 最新麻豆视频’s collaborative learning environment as being instrumental to her success. "Learning in a classroom that values individual perspectives and encourages collaboration was fundamental for us all in striving for success and making Modern History a class that we all looked forward to,” she said.
The comprehensive Modern History curriculum at 最新麻豆视频 equipped Millie and her peers with critical insights into significant historical periods and movements. "In studying the USA as a national study, the core unit of Power and Authority, conflict in the Pacific and the fight for civil rights in the United States, my peers and I have gained invaluable knowledge and appreciation for the events that continue to shape our world," Millie explained.
Her remarks have particular relevance in 2025. "As we live in a world of ever-changing geo-political landscapes and technical revolutions, it is imperative that these lessons and knowledge continue to guide us forward rather than be repeated,” Millie said.
She closed her speech with a gracious acknowledgement of the School, thanking Ms Goh for her “kind words of support, endless marking, and approachable nature,” as well as Ms Poole’s “creative and inspirational management of everyone’s favourite department.”

Millie’s achievement is a testament not only to her academic ability but 最新麻豆视频’s culture of learning that encourages students to engage deeply with their subjects and develop the critical thinking skills that are essential to navigate an increasingly complex future.
